So here i got momo which is also known as dumpling or dimsum in my first menu list which i have found easy to prepare and offcourse it's perfect to eat. My mom finds it difficult to prepare Momo (dumpling) and she refuses every time i ask her to make. She asks me to have only during winter not caring that it is my all time favourite fast food, so i asked my aunt for the recipe and learnt  to prepare it.
Also my native is Nepal where momo (dumpling) is one of the very famous fast food so, thought to start with this simple and delicious dish in my own style as my first contribution to the world of food.

About Momo (dumpling).

Momo is a type of South Asian dumpling native to Tibet, Nepal and the Sikkim, Assam and Darjeeling regions of India. It s similar to Chinese Baozi and Jiazi, Mangolian Burz, Japanee Gyoza and Korean Mandu.
Momo is the colloquial form of the Tibetian word "mog mog". It has many different name like dumpling, dimsum but got popular as momo in different part of India.

The dish is believed to be of Tibetan origin and since then has spread to other neighbouring countries with the influx of Tibetan diaspora.

Momo is a type of steamed dumpling with some of filling and that filling can be of different vegetables, paneer for all vegetarian lovers and for non-vegetarian it can be of ground meat, pork, chicken.
Momo has become a traditional delicacy in Nepal/Tibet and among Nepalese/Tibetan communities in Bhutan as well as people of Sikkim state and Darjeeling district of India. It is one of the most popular fast food in Nepal and have spread to other countries like US(some parts) and UK.

 Momo (dumpling) in 2 easy steps.

I'm preparing chicken momo with spicy chutney here. So, let's start with all the ingredient and stuff we need. I'm writing the process of preparing momo step by step (starting from ingredient till it gets ready) to make it little easy to follow.


For Momo (dumpling)        

  1. Plain White Flour     1/2Kg
  2. Minced Chicken      1/2Kg           
  3. Onion.                       1/2Kg
  4. Spring Onion.           150m
  5. Soyabean Oil.           300ml
  6. Soya Sauce.              2 tbl spoon
  7. Ginger Paste.           Half spoon
  8. Garlic Paste.            Half spoon
  9. Plain Salt.                 1 to 2 tbl spoon or as per taste.
  10. Chinese/Tasting Salt (Ajino moto).  1tbl spoon
  11. Red Wine (Optional).   4 tbl spoon

For Spicy Chutney/Sauce

  1. Tomato.                      6 to7 (medium size)
  2. Dry Red Chilly.         10 to 12
  3. Cloves of Garlic.        8 to 10
  4. Lemon.                        1
That's all ingredient we need to prepare momo or dumpling. Above mentioned ingredient quantity is for 4 to 5 person (approx). Now let's start step by step and prepare the delicious momo. Here i'm starting with the Spicy chutney in the first step than in second step i will start with momo (dumpling).

Step 1 for Spicy Chutney.

  • Fry tomato in little oil or we can also roast it on medium flame of gas stove so that we can easily peel off the skin of tomato. After getting done with fry or roasting, peel off the skin and clean the tomato.
  • Roast the red chilly on light flame of gas stove.
  • Now these ingredient are ready to get into the grinder.
  • Add all roasted tomato and roasted chilly along with 8 to 10 cloves of garlic.
  • Add 1 tbl spoon salt.
  • Squeeze half lemon and grind it well.
I have chosen simple method of making spicy chutney. It would not take much time and it is very easy to prepare.

Step 2 for Momo.

I have divided this process into two parts where i will be preparing stuffing or filling for the momo in first part and dough in the second.

  • Let's clean the minced chicken nicely.
  • Chop the onions and spring onions.
  • Now mix the chopped onion and spring onion with the minced chicken.
  • Add soya sauce, ginger and garlic paste, soyabeans or refined oil.
  • Add red wine which is optional. I love red wine so i'am adding here because it also enhances the taste of momo.
  • Mix it well. It would be good if you are mixing it with your hand.
  • After mixing everything now add plain salt and chinese salt which is also known as Ajino-moto or taste enhancer.
  • Again mix it well.
We are done now with our first part which is for stuffing. Now we will start second part where we will prepare the dough.
  • Add water on plain white flour and make a soft dough. It should be of perfect consistence. Better if we keep adding little water on flour and mixing it well till our dough become soft and perfect.
  • Make small balls or pieces from the dough.
  • Now roll the small balls and flatten it with the rolling pin. Make it thin layer for stuffing.
  • Now stuff the flatten thin layer of dough with the filling which we have prepared above and wrap it around and give it your own shape.
  • Take a steam vessel which is made for steaming momo.
  • fill the vessel with right amount of water and boil it.
  • When the water starts boiling add half lemon on boiled water.
  • Apply little oil on dumpling tray and place the momos on it.
  • Now put the tray on the steam vessel when water starts boiling.
  • Steam the momo for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Check after 20 minutes. If you find that colour has been slightly changed and it is not sticky, that means momo is ready and can be served with the spicy chutney. Or if not than we have to keep it for another 5 to 10 minutes.
It is best to have hot steam momos with red spicy chutney. People also prefer fried momo which is just another step where we have to fry our steam momos on medium heat of oil. Process is the same till the steaming momo and further step is frying your steam momo and you are ready with your fried momo as well.

And also for my vegetarian friends, process and step for preparing veg. momo will remain the same, only you have to replace minced chicken with any vegetables. I prefer minced cabbage for making veg. momo. And I'm sure all my veggie friends would like it too.

I hope i have made it simple and easy. All momo lover can now try making it by their own by following above method.
